5 Digital Marketing Trends You Can’t Ignore in 2023

2023 is here! As the world moves even more digital, what can we expect from digital marketing in 2023?

Global Changes through 2022 which have had an Impact on Digital Marketing

There have been big changes in the world through 2022 which have had an impact on how people conduct business and how much they rely on online resources.

Cost of Living Rise, this is causing internet users to be more cautious about buying both online and offline. More research is going into purchases than ever before. So, making sure you have content on your website which gives insight to your products and your business is more important than ever.

The changes in social media and the rise in usage. More channels favour short videos which are easy for the user to create. Users are spending more time on these channels and the content they are interest in viewing has changed.

Changes in privacy laws means that users require trust signals for brands before using their online booking form or shop. Online booking/buying remains popular following the pandemic, therefore including an interactive booking or contact form is extremely important for websites in 2023.

So, What Digital Marketing Trends Can We Expect for 2023?

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The advancement in technology has meant that there has been an improvement in AI.

Chatbots – Through 2022 we’ve seen more websites make use of live chat and we’re now moving further into chatbots and robots being the main source of communication within them. Although controversial, this has become more and more popular and we can expect to see this continue to be a popular addition to websites into 2023.

Scheduling – another aspect of digital marketing which has been available for some time now but has recently advanced is using AI to schedule your social posts for you. This is based on when your followers are at their most active and when it is predicted that you will get the most engagement.

Metaverse – still in it’s growth stage, the metaverse has been bought into by some of the biggest brands including Nike, Starbucks and many more. This is predicted to continue to grow through 2023.

2. SEO – Search Engine Optimisation

You’ve probably heard about SEO before, it is all about elements of your website you can include/improve to help search engines notice your site and have it show within search engine results pages (SERPs) for keywords and phrases relevant to your business.

Although SEO first came into practice in the early to mid 90’s, it is still a growing trend which brands need to take seriously in 2023 and beyond. Best practices and elements of SEO are changing and being refined constantly as search engines themselves become more savvy. If your business does not have an SEO strategy for 2023 it is time to start one.

In 2022, Orbelo  reported that Google processes over 99,000 searches per second, that’s 8.5 billion searches per day.

How can you use this information in your SEO strategy? As always, content is king. Creating high-quality, in-depth content can help with many aspects of digital marketing.

Some of the most popular types of content for 2023 are;

Video content – particularly videos explaining something. This could be products, services, experiences etc. Videos have been steadily increasing for a number of years in digital marketing but the recent increase in platforms such as TikTok have meant clients not only respond better to videos but actually expect brands to have video content available.

In-depth written content – this could be in the form of on-page content, blog content, white papers, how to guides. In 2023, website users are over thin content which has been created for the sole purpose of SEO. Users want content which is useful and adds value to their current knowledge. Following Googles Useful Content update in 2022, many websites creating thin, non-valuable content will have been penalised for this as Google favours information rich content written for people.

User Generated Content – this is the hardest type of content to obtain because it relies on your current customers and clients to help you create it. Another Google update from 2022 was centred around product reviews. This update targeted low quality reviews and favoured in depth. This was the 5th update in a series to ensure reviews are real and favouring sites which had really high quality authentic reviews.

3. Social Media

According to Oberlo, Social media usage has increased 6.5% through 2022 into 2023. This brings overall social media uses to 4.89billion world-wide. This is a 79.1% increase in the last 5 years.

Social media is having a bigger impact on digital marketing – especially in the B2C world. There are more content creators than ever spanning various platforms including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook.

Influencer Marketing – There has been a huge increase in the amount of influencer marketing we see through 2022 and this is still on the increase and expected to continue to increase though 2023. As users spend more time on social media, then this could be a great way for more brands to make the most of this and gain further brand awareness and exposure.

Brands need to carefully consider their social media strategy, what aspects will their strategy incorporate and how they will manage it.

Bigger Marketing Trends for 2023

As well as digitally focused marketing trends, there are also some wider trends which will have an impact on how businesses market this year.

4. The Environment

Within the current climate, brands are feeling the pressure to go eco. Whether this is making their products more environmentally friendly or giving something back to the environment.

Brands will be adding something to their marketing strategy where they tell the world about what they are doing to help the environment. This could be farming their produce in a different way to preserve animals and their habitats, changing their packaging types so they are sustainable, making their products more concentrated or altering package sizes so that the user requires less for the same effect or funding an environmental project.

Some of these trends we have already seen through 2022 but these will continue into the new year and digital marketing campaigns will be sure to follow.

5. Privacy

GDPR is so 2016, but there is still uncertainty around how some companies use and store their data. According to a google study 43% of people would switch brands if they felt their privacy wasn’t respected or if they had a bad privacy experience.

Into 2023, users need to feel that they are in control of their data and how it can be used.
